          "value": "Among the many contributions which Karl Polanyi made to economic history, his posthumously published study of the market structure of the kingdom of Dahomey (c. 1650-1894) is ljkely to win a place of its own. Professor Bohannan's introductory description of it as \"a major source of comparative insight\" does not seem excessive: here at last we have a really solid work in the field of precolonial economic analysis. I say \"at last\" because the study of African economic institutions has for long been the Cinderella of our whole subject, and it was high time that the poor girl was given a start on her ride from rags to riches. Save for a few partial exceptions, serious writing about the African past has been somewhat narrowly limited to the political past; the impoverishment that flows from this has begun to be embarrassing. With Polanyi's book Cinderella doesn't yet arrive at riches, since many useful items are still missing from her trousseau, but at least she gets a square meal and the promise of better things to come. In this respect, Dahomey and the Slave Trade marks an important enlargement of our historiography: as important in its way as Goitein's recent discussion of Cairene and related trades in the tenth through thirteenth centuries, 1 while much more important for the more specialized field of tropical Africa; and its influence will be felt for a long time to come."
