Diego de Landa was a Spanish missionary who worked in the Yucatan Peninsula during the 16th century. Among other things, he has been held responsible for the destruction of all breakable or inflammable Maya artifacts - only three codices actually did survive the bonfires. However, he also compiled a coprehensive survey of Maya beliefs at the time of the conquest.
