Collectively, they are an outstanding achievement; but individually they have been prey to thoughtless habits and fickle fancies. The author summarizes his story, from 1788 to the present day, as 'a material triumph and an aesthetic calamity'. Readers will thoroughly enjoy the combination of informative detail and quiet humour, and the architectural features of a house, a street, or a suburb, which have hitherto simply been 'different', will gain an added significance and interest. --from back cover.
