brief_description
A history of the British Museum recording the development of the Reading Room from a smoky clubroom to the unparalleled collection which is became under the guidance of Panizzi, the Italian librarian-genius. Tracing the growth of the natural history sections until their enforced emigration to South Kensington. Miller details the organisation of the trophies - the Elgin Marbles, Layard's excavations of Nineveh - which found their way into the Museum's halls. The story of the building itself also makes absorbing reading, from the acquisition of Montagu House, to the construction of Smirke's Greek Revival edifice, to its survival, battered but basically intact, through the Blitz. And now the British Museum is on the threshold of its greatest expansion yet - to become a focal point of international scholarship.
