brief_description
Every bibliophile will welcome this little volume, so engaging and yet so hardheaded, which both leads away into libraries and learning of the seventeenth century and at the same time offers sound practical advice to book collectors of the present, whether librarians in great or small places, or men and women of other pursuits who have an intelligent interest in book. Gabriel Naudé, a medical student who became a remarkable librarian, addressed his Advice to one wealthy Frenchman, and the immediate result was the Memmian Library. But the book keeps on speaking, and even today can be heeded with profit by as many as use it. The Advice begins with a defense of collecting book and includes an account of books to be bought and books to be passed by, a discussion of schemes for arranging a library, and a description of a proper library building and its ornaments. The present translation, though based on the only one in English hitherto published (John Evelyn's of 1661), is in effect new and is reliably close to the original French. The book has some explanatory notes for the modern reader, offers the names of some books and articles about Naudé, and includes an index which shows how far-ranging was Naudé's acquaintance with the works of learned men. The Introduction is by Archer taylor, whose many publications in the fields of medieval literature and bibliography, and of folklore, are well known. --Dust jacket
