The fatal environment : the myth of the frontier in the age of industrialization 1800-1890 / by Richard Slotkin

This study examines how the myth of frontier expansion justified America's rise to power. Using the metaphor of Custer's Last Stand, it analyses how these myths were redefined in response to the social anxieties of nineteenth-century industrialisation and imperialism.
